Basil Bunny, 1999-2007

With us since January of 2000, when she was a youngster bunny of just 8 or 10 weeks, our house rabbit Basil had to be put to sleep yesterday. We’ll miss her jumping, wiggling, racing, mischievous personality; her penchant for long hugs; her life-long quest to become friends with the cat; even her discovery that an effective way to get our attention was to find something not meant to be chewed on by bunnies and chew on it.

My Grandmother is Gone

The call came through last night from the United States: my grandmother died in her sleep, apparently having suffered a massive stroke. She was 92. Today, my baby daughter is 16 days old, and her great grandmother Florence is 1 day gone. The two will never meet.

Our Christmas Baby Surprise!

When she was 10 years old, my wife told her aunt that she thought parents who had babies so their birthdays coincided with Christmas were just inconsiderate; she would certainly never do any such thing. But with an official due date of 28 December, we always knew that our first baby might wind up violating my wife’s Prime Directive about when to give birth. So the fact that Kathryn brought our new daughter into the world at 6:32 on Christmas morning was ironic but not surprising. No, what was surprising was that she accomplished this feat in less than 4 hours, with no drugs, and was back at home less than 12 hours after leaving for the hospital.

Poorly Pets and the Christmas Baby Countdown

With 2 days til Christmas and 5 days til the official due date of our first child, my wife and I have been trying to achieve a gradual winding down in our to-ing and fro-ing, fetching and organising. Each day, we’ve been looking forward to having a real break, some rest and relaxation — and each day, something has come up to make it a bit less than straightforward. Today, it was our cat, some quick veterinary treatment for our cat…and the clean-up afterwards.
